Fibromyalgia affects an estimated 1 in 20 people in the UK, mostly women, and is notoriously difficult to treat. The condition is characterised by chronic widespread pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and cognitive difficulties—often referred to as “fibro fog.” For many, conventional treatments like painkillers, antidepressants, and talking therapies offer limited or short-term relief. That’s why new, evidence-based therapies are being explored with growing interest.
One such approach is ozone therapy, a technique that uses a controlled mix of oxygen and ozone gas to stimulate healing and modulate inflammation in the body. Ozone has been shown to increase oxygen delivery to tissues, reduce oxidative stress, and support immune function—factors that may play a role in fibromyalgia.
What Did the Study Find?
A 2021 study published in the European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences investigated the effects of ozone therapy in 65 patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia. The treatments followed medical ozone protocols established by the Scientific Society of Oxygen-Ozone Therapy (SIOOT) and included:
- Major Autohemotherapy (MAH): where blood is drawn, mixed with ozone, then reinfused.
- Rectal Insufflation: a less invasive method, also used in medical ozone applications.
Patients underwent several sessions over a period of time. The results were encouraging:
- Significant reduction in pain intensity
- Improved physical functioning and energy levels
- Enhanced overall quality of life
Importantly, no major side effects were reported, and many participants described a greater ability to engage in daily activities—something that’s often compromised in fibromyalgia sufferers.
What Does This Mean for You?
While ozone therapy is not yet a standard treatment for fibromyalgia, this study adds to a growing body of research supporting its potential benefits. At Flow and Glow, we’re passionate about providing access to therapies that are rooted in emerging science and offer real-world relief.
If you’ve been struggling to find answers for your fibromyalgia symptoms, ozone therapy may be worth exploring as a complementary option—especially when delivered by experienced practitioners in a safe, clinical setting.
